Rifle Plates

Much has been made about rifle plates. I am no expert but I know good products when I see them.

Two good companies to think about purchasing plates from are:

Prices will vary on both because of materials. 

For the price, it is impossible to beat the AR500 Armor Plates. They have a Line-X coating on them to prevent spalling. I have a 10x12 Advanced Shooters Cut (ASC) with the extra build up. I got it with a 15% discount on a special they were running. I had it 5 days later from Arizona. The plate was surprisingly comfortable. The plus side to steel plates is their durability. You don't have to worry about dropping these and breaking them. They will likely break the ground if dropped. The downside is they are a little heavy. The price is just right on these at $85.00.













I also have a ceramic plate from Bulletproofme.com. This a 10x12 also and is triple curved. This thing rocks. The comfort is outstanding and it is a stand-alone multi-hit plate. The downside with this one is "multi-hit" for ceramic plates means 2-3 hits and the plate is toast. Granted the plate does its job and you are alive, who cares? The price is quite high on these compared to the AR500 plates. Upwards of $250.00 each for the ceramic.


Both options are great. Find what works for you and your budget. Train and get in shape. Lugging around gear requires strength and endurance. Get ready before SHTF. Don't make it harder on yourself by being unprepared.

ATS War Belt Review

A few days ago I ordered a new battle belt (BB). I went with the ATS Tactical War Belt. I ordered it on a Sunday Evening and it shipped Monday morning and arrived Wednesday afternoon.

Before I get into the ATS belt, I want to point out why I wanted to change to something better.

I was using a Condor Gen II Molle belt. It works fine and is quite comfortable. Plus it doesn't break the bank at around $24.00. Couple the belt with a $15.00 H-harness from Condor and I had a great set-up. Of course, as I progressed in my training and in my philosophy of how to best use a BB (Thanks to Max's CRCD course), my BB needed to change. The only problem with the Condor belt is the sides that curve around the waist. As you can see from the below picture, there are missing sections that allow for flexibility in the belt.




You can clearly see that I am missing sections of molle webbing. While this may seem like a small issue, I guarantee you it is not. In the bottom picture, the open section of webbing to the left of the SERPA holster is where my IFAK usually goes. After that is attached, I have NO ROOM left for anything else like food, water, extra ammo, nothing.

Tangent: I am experimenting with SAW ammo pouches to find a good balance of storage and comfort. Pictured is a 200rd pouch stuffed with Clif bars, jerky, and an MRE for patrol. This pouch is much too large for a BB and will be thrown in the patrol ruck in exchange for a few 100rd pouches.



Enter the ATS Tactical War Belt.

Not only is this thing very well build, it's light, comfortable, made in the USA, and has no breaks in the molle webbing. It also has 3 rows of webbing versus the two rows Condor utilizes.




The inside of the belt (where the web/riggers belt goes) is lined with Velcro to secure the belts to one another. It truly felt like one belt when I had everything attached. The padding in the belt is about 1/4" thick foam pad which feels great. The lining is also a type of moisture-wicking material to keep the wearer cool. I use a Blackhawk 2.25" duty belt as an inner belt. While that may seem like overkill to most, I love it because it gives fantastic support to my gear.

The bottom of the ATS War Belt does not fasten closed on the bottom. It is open to allow attaching gear to the inner belt at any point - this is an awesome design feature. 

The harness loops are ITW Nexus if that matters to you. I honestly don't know the difference in manufacturers. This brand seems to be widely used by higher quality manufacturers. My Condor h-harness will be used to support this.

I normally set my BB up like this from left to right: (see first picture)

2 HSGI Tacos for speed reloads
1 Condor MA4 double M4 mag pouch (holds 4 GI mags or 4 PMAGs) - to refill HSGI Tacos when empty. These will fit AR, AK and FAL mags with no problem.
BDS Ultimate Dump Pouch  very large dump pouch w/ different attachment options. It does take up some room if you mount it to your BB so I advise attaching it directly to your inner belt. 
USGI Saw Ammo Pouch - 100rd and 200rd. Great for storing short-term food and extra mags.
Paint the suckers!
IFAK - Condor Brand in Multicam - this is simply fantastic. Yeah, it's Chinese. Its a tri-fold design that allows for plenty of goody storage like chest seals, clotting agents, etc. Plus it rips away from the velcro panel for quick access.
Blackhawk SERPA - Good retention holster. Probably going to change it out at sometime for a standard molle holster if space becomes an issue as it takes up 4 sections of molle.

Tangent #2: I've been thinking about adding a fighting knife or some sort of blade to the belt. I am not sure how to mount it securely though. I have a Gerber LMF II. I think it's a great knife that holds an edge very well. The sheath is pretty good and has a great retention. Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I may stick with my Recon I knife in my pocket as a close quarters type weapon.



I have worn the belt around and must say it much more comfortable than the Condor. I will update as I become more comfortable with this belt.

New Battle Belt

I ordered a new battle belt over the weekend from ATS Tactical. I will do a review on it and compare it to my current battle belt. ATS makes good quality stuff made in the USA. I have one of their medical inserts on my plate carrier and its made quite well.

Stay tuned. This new belt offers a ton more real estate for gear than my current belt.

New low for Police...

Police in New Mexico obtained a search warrant for a New Mexico man suspected of carrying drugs in his anal cavity.

The man was pulled over for failing to completely stop at a stop sign. Police pulled him over (a minor traffic offense, no big deal right?) WRONG! Claiming he was holding his buttocks, a warrant was obtained to search his anal cavity for narcotics. This is what they did to him:

1. Eckert’s abdominal area was X-rayed; no narcotics were found.
2. Doctors then performed an exam of Eckert’s anus with their fingers; no narcotics were found.
3. Doctors performed a second exam of Eckert’s anus with their fingers; no narcotics were found.
4. Doctors penetrated Eckert’s anus to insert an enema. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.
5. Doctors penetrated Eckert’s anus to insert an enema a second time. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.
6. Doctors penetrated Eckert’s anus to insert an enema a third time. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.

I bet those officers had a great laugh at all the trouble and misery they caused this guy. I hope he gets them fired and wins millions.

Reporter's Home raided by Armed Thugs, I mean Police

Maryland State Police (SWAT/HIT Team) raided the home of Audrey Hudson, a freelance reporter. They confiscated confidential documents.

This is what the search warrant was for:
"A copy of the search warrant shows law enforcement officials were cleared to search her home for firearms, according to the Daily Caller. Hudson’s husband, Paul Flanagan, was found guilty in 1986 of resisting arrest and is forbidden by law from owning or possessing a firearm, explaining why the raid allowed authorities to search their shared property for firearms."



Yes, you read that correctly.



"Hudson said an investigator with the Coast Guard’s Investigative Service identified her as the reporter responsible for writing a series of articles critical of air marshals for The Washington Times newspaper." (emphasis added)


Sadly for the police, no firearms were found and no one was murdered. But confidential documents were taken.



North Korea called. It wants it's dictatorship back.

Here we go again...

Another school shooting...

This is sad. Grossman said he feared terrorists would begin targeting our schools since they are soft targets with little to no security. He said floor plans for some schools in the Midwest were found in terrorist strongholds in Iraq and Afghanistan. All the more reason to home school.

It does not appear that the shooter has been identified. 








Painting your rifle

I know many people are apprehensive to paint their rifle(s). If you have a black AR15 style rifle, you should considering doing so. In the woods, that black rifle will stick out like a sore thumb. A poorly painted rifle will blend better than a black rifle.

There are plenty of how-to videos on YouTube for painting a rifle.

I reluctantly painted mine. The great thing about going cheap on painting is that you can change your paint scheme whenever you feel like it. Once I made the decision to paint it, this is how I did it.

Materials:


Cost of paint materials: about $25.00
Paint and matte finish came from Wal-Mart
Adhesion promoter came from Advance Auto Parts

Process:

In a well ventilated area I liberally sprayed my rifle down with the gun scrubber. Using the pressurized spray makes this much easier. I let the gun dry then sprayed it down a final time letting it dry afterwards until it was dry to the touch. 

I closed the dust cover to the bolt and packed the mag well with paper towels.

I then sprayed the rifle with the adhesion promoter which you can get at any auto parts store and let it dry.

Next I sprayed the rifle with the khaki color until I had a good coat. I used the khaki as a primer/base color. This was done to allow the OD green and the brown to take to the rifle better.

Then came the OD green followed with stripes of brown.

Now, I did get a little splatter from the paint because of some wind. I honestly don't care. I originally had more a khaki color as the base and then used a mesh onion bag to add depth with green and brown. That color scheme did not blend so well in North Florida, so I changed it.

Finally, I sprayed the rifle with the matte finish to seal it. It works. The paint is less likely to chip. It isn't really necessary though as it takes a quick spray to touch up anything that may have chipped. 

The whole process took about an hour. 

Lastly, you will want to let this air dry for a few hours. Ideally, you have a fan to speed the process. Unless, you want your room to smell like spray paint, this is a must. 

I have added some photos of the final product below. If I don't think this looks cool next month, I'll change it. After all, looking cool is what matters, right?

Yes, theoretically it should not make a difference but in the spirit of keeping up relationships with the locals I have to be sensitive to this - and one neighbor specifically asked me about deer season. I guess he was not looking forward to trying to hunt while a firefight was going on up on my ranges.....!
I have put December 14/15 on the schedule to run this additional CRCD class. If I meet huge objections and /or no-one books, I'll look at alternatives, but they are limited at that time of year.

Term Limits

If nothing else, the government "shutdown" shows the need for one thing above all else; term limits.

This leads me to where I think we are headed. I urge all of you to read the fantastic work of fiction by recently departed Vince Flynn entitled Term Limits.

The book takes place during the good ol' days when the national debt was $5 trillion. A group of former SEALs decide to take matters into their own hands and start killing government officials.

Just read it and tell me what you think. A page turning masterpiece in my opinion.

If this shutdown of the SNAP shutdown is true, be ready. We have heard people threatening to riot if they don't get their EBT money.

We saw what will happen when there is a "glitch" in the system.

We know how many millions are dependent on government. We all probably live near an area that is densely populated with parasites and leeches who will stop at nothing to get "theirs" even though it's really mine and yours, the taxpayers.

Make sure on and around Novemeber 1, you have your gun just in case. Bring extra mags with you to work. This could be the beginning of the collapse.

If you've never heard of Cloward-Piven, read this. It will absolutely make sense of the welfare state.

It's simply a matter of time. We wait until they force us to respond.

October 12/13 Max Velocity Tactical CRCD - AAR

What a weekend! 24 hours round trip from Florida to West Virginia. Was it worth it? Absolutely.



Day 1:

The day started with a safety brief. After the brief, Max outlined the day. the cornerstone to the weekend was RTR.
Return fire
Take Cover
Return Appropriate Fire

Every contact began with the RTR concept.  So learn it well.

The first set of drills were individual on Range #1. Max uses this to gauge your proficiency with a rifle. He also uses this time to make sure you followed the safety brief given at the beginning of the day. Even if you're doing everything right, you will hear "Apply safety catch and finger off the trigger" from Max as a friendly reminder. Max watches over the students very carefully. He expects students to be responsible. After all, we are preparing for SHTF, not a picnic so be serious when it comes to weapon manipulation.

Midway through the first day we began working in a buddy pair. In my case, my buddy was my dad. He was running an AK while I ran my AR. We probably shot around 300-330 rounds a day.

The buddy drills consisted of offensive movement toward an enemy position and breaking contact with an enemy position. Again, RTR was the foundation for every drill.

Remember, the lower you are the better. Also, communication is key. I made the mistake numerous times to simply yell my "moving" reply to the "move" command from my buddy or team leader without looking for them or projecting my voice in that direction. You must yell towards the buddy or team. If you don't project towards your team, you might as well not say anything because it is loud and you must be heard above the noise. It is the key to survival for your team.

We cycled through buddy drills; Contact front, left, and right. Break contact front. Then we worked for a short time on peeling when faced with contact left and right. We finished the day in a 4 man team doing the same drills as we did in buddy pairs.

Keep one thing in mind - Max's drills are simple. That's the beauty of this course.

Day 2:

Day two picked up where day 1 left off except we moved to range #2. Range #2 is much larger and more complex than range 1. That becomes apparent rather quickly when you're out of shape like I am. The day progressed with buddy pair drills and team drills. The distances at which targets were engaged was increased. I think the greatest distance was around 75 meters. The day culminated with a squad attack on a fixed position - the bunker. This was the best way to illustrate offensive movements on a larger scale. It was quite satisfying knowing we killed Ivan.


What Did I Learn?

A bunch.

1. I am woefully unfit. This became apparent on range #2. Thankfully, that is going to change. I have begun setting goals for becoming an asset to my group rather than a liability.
2. Single point slings are very good at allowing the muzzle of my rifle to fill with mud. It was better to un-clip the sling to maneuver with the rifle during drills.
3. It pays to have a handgun ready to go. During a drill, the muzzle of my rifle filled with mud and I had to transition to my handgun and engage the target to provide cover for my buddy while he fixed his stoppage.
4. I got better about putting spent mags in my dump pouch as the weekend progressed. So work on that.
5. You can actually load 31 rounds of 5.56 in both PMAGs and aluminum mags causing them to not seat properly. It pays to count.
6. I had to change my super cool gear set-up because it was not as functional as I wanted. But my gear does work very well. My rifle ran flawlessly. I couldn't have been happier with it. My optic though bit the dust. I guess that's a good enough excuse to spend money on a better piece of equipment.

The course was full. 12 students total. Our backgrounds ranged from sales to IT and from truck driver to former military and even a couple government workers. Read his books to get a jump start on the concepts.

Florida Cop taken to Federal Court

In my home state, there are calls to do more to protect citizens from cops like this guy. In 2011, the State Legislature passed a bill that protected concealed carry permit holders from inadvertent, non-threatening exposure of their firearm.  For example, you're carrying outside-the-waistband but have a cover garment like a sports coat or jacket. The wind blows your coat open and your firearm is exposed for all to see. In Florida, you have committed no crime. It was simply an accident and chalked-up as an accident. No harm, no foul.

Well, for the man in this article, it might as well have been attempted murder of a police officer. The cop actually threatens to shoot him in the back. What a tough guy.

Common Core

If you have not heard of Common Core standards, I urge you to check out the many articles and videos on The Blaze.

Common Core seeks to further destroy the identity of America by distorting or outright lying about the Founders and their motives. Not only is it repugnant but it is dangerous.

A man was forcibly removed by an off-duty thug. I can honestly say if he put his hands on me for asking a question, he would have been unconscious. That is not simply bravado but is the truth. No one, no matter who it is, has the right to put their hands on you.

What this illustrates is the fact that in Amerika, we are no longer free to question authority as is evident by the video. Why should we tolerate this type of oppression?

A teacher friend of mine who teaches for a private Christian school said the public school system will eventually kill itself because of lack of competition. Take notice at the number of charter schools, private schools, and the number of those who are homeschooling in your area. Now compare that with a few years ago. The difference, at least in my area, is astounding.


If they win it is because we let them.

It's been a while. 

A young man exercising his "freedom" was passing out copies of the Constitution on Constitution Day. Modesto Junior College, a place that surely calls itself an institution of "higher learning" and tolerance, decided to have him removed, by force if necessary if he didn't move his activities to the "free speech zone" undoubtedly away from all student activity.

Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised to see liberals or anti-American institutions act like anti-America institutions.

Carry Permits means Cops will shoot you...

The Chicago Police Thug-in-Chief, I mean Superintendent Garry McCarthy, said that more carry permits will lead to more of his henchmen killing innocent "civilians". I didn't know he was on the battlefield.....

To his credit he did say it is not good when police shoot someone who is no threat to them. BUT he did not say if those cops should be punished for their actions. In fact I bet money that he would protect them with all the same lines we hear in our cities. "The suspect reached for something in his waistband." "The officers feared for their lives." and blah blah blah.

Let's not forget why McCarthy feels this way. He thinks it's because the police are trained to shoot first and ask questions later. Of course that is a paraphrase but that's what he should have said. He actually says the following:

“You put more guns on the street expect more shootings,” McCarthy said. “I don’t care if they’re licensed legal firearms, people who are not highly trained… putting guns in their hands is a recipe for disaster. So I’ll train our officers that there is a concealed carry law, but when somebody turns with a firearm in their hand the officer does not have an obligation to wait to get shot to return fire and we’re going to have tragedies as a result of that. I’m telling you right up front.”

If I were ever to be a sheriff or hold a similar oversight position, my standard for treating situations involving a LEO shooting an innocent would be If I had done that as a private citizen in that same circumstance, would I go to jail?

By and large the answer would be yes. Private citizens just can't get away with shooting someone because they reached for something.

I am tired of being talked to like a subject that has to rely on police to "protect" me. They wonder why there is a us vs. them mentality. This is why; because there is no law of the land. At any one time we are breaking a law. It was by design too. To make their job easier and us less free. Mark my words, just wait until one of those cops in Chicago pulls his gun on the wrong guy - the one who refuses to be threatened with government sanctioned violence.

Be prepared at all times.

Founders to blame...Again?

It looks like the president just can't take the blame for anything. Surprise! He is now blaming the Founders for the second day in a row for not allowing him to be crowned king (Messiah, preferably).

Founder = Extremists??

Yes, the Pentagon did call the Founder's ideology, philosophy "extremism". That means only one thing; conservatives, Tea Partiers, preppers, libertarians, Patriots, Republic Defenders, etc will soon be labeled extremists too. Oh wait! That's already happened too.

Should we be surprised? Not necessarily. Perhaps we are to blame. After all, we do love this country. We want to see it thrive in a free market, be a leader in the world market. We are the ones who fly planes into buildings, commit mass shootings, bomb marathons in Boston, etc. Nope. Those who do those things are on the left - always. 

At any rate; our government has decided, since King Obama has been in office to equate conservative, liberty-loving individuals with "extremist" or "terrorist" groups any chance they get.  

We didn't start it and we didn't want it. But if they mean to have a war, let it come. 

It is necessary to note why the government is doing this. They are setting the stage for a scapegoat. When another attack happens by some muslims or left wing group, we will have been made the culprit. The media has tried to blame us numerous times for attacks. The Aurora Colorado shooter was thought to have been a Tea Party member in the beginning. Mark my words, something will happen. It could even be a "false flag" type of event coupled with media hysteria that leads to something so reasonable, at the time, as gun confiscation. The question being bantered back and forth after the Boston Marathon bombing was whether or not we needed more CCTV to track people or "intercept a threat" (have you seen Minority Report?). And of course the morons who want to feel "safe" were all for it; a majority of the population of this nation I suspect.

Mark my words. There's a storm coming.

The Culper Ring

The art of spycraft is nothing new. It has been around for thousands of years. One of the first times I read about spies was in the Bible. Moses sent spies in to what would become the Promised Land (Canaan). Read the account in Numbers 13 here. Many also know there was a spy ring during the American Revolution. It was known as the Culper Ring.

Here are some neat things I found about the ring:



The Culper Spy Ring was an American spy network operating during the War of American Independence that provided George Washington with information on British troop movements. In November 1778, George Washington appointed Major Benjamin Tallmadge as director of military intelligence, charged with creating a spy ring in New York City, the site of British headquarters.

This network became known as the Culper Spy Ring and operated successfully in and around New York City for five years, during which time no spy was ever unmasked. Indeed even Washington was ignorant of the spies' identities. Tallmadge's informants consisted of friends he made at school on Long Island, including Austin Roe, Caleb Brewster, Abraham Woodhull, and Anna Strong.

Though Woodhull was Tallmadge's chief agent, Robert Townsend was an important informant who posed as a Loyalist coffee-shop owner and merchant while working as a society journalist. As a reporter Townsend was able to obtain information from the British at society gatherings.

In order to safeguard the identity of his spies, Tallmadge utilized a number of protective measures. Tallmadge gave his informants pseudonyms and invented a numerical substitution system to identify his informants rather than use names. Seven hundred and sixty-three numbers were used, with 711 denoting General Washington, 745 representing England and 727 for New York. Tallmadge and his associates also wrote in invisible ink. (H/T)

During the Revolutionary War, Washington spent more than 10 percent of his military funds on intelligence activities. Two weeks after taking command of the Continental Army on 2 July 1775, he recorded his first expenditure for intelligence collection--$333 to an unidentified officer to travel to Boston and establish a network of agents to gather intelligence on enemy movements and intentions.
A year later, Washington established a unit known as Knowlton's Rangers, under the command of Lt. Col. Thomas Knowlton, to carry out reconnaissance and raids against British facilities. This unit was the first American military intelligence organization; the US Army has characterized it as a historical parent of the modern-day Army Rangers, Special Forces, and Delta Force. The ill-fated American spy Nathan Hale was recruited from this early Ranger force.

But it was Washington's adroitness as a manager of agents and his skillful use of their reporting that best commend him as the Founding Father of American collection of foreign intelligence. In addition to managing countless spies around British forces' locations, he ran numerous agent networks inside British-controlled New York City and Philadelphia. His operatives provided daily reporting on British troop movements and often were able to report on the plans and intentions of enemy commanders.
After the British seized control of New York City in autumn 1776, Washington directed the activities of numerous spies there. Of particular note was the Culper spy ring, which comprised about 20 people. This network, established in the summer of 1778, was managed by Major Benjamin Tallmadge of the 2nd Connecticut Light Dragoons, who operated from an outpost on the Hudson River above the city. The Culper ring was the most professional of Washington's agent networks. It used code names, secret writing, enciphered communications, couriers, dead drops, signal sites, and specific collection requirements.

The most important piece of intelligence obtained through the Culper ring came in July 1780. A network member known to this day only as "Lady" reported that British General Sir Henry Clinton had decided to send British troops by sea from New York City to Newport, Rhode Island, to attack newly arrived French forces under General Rochambeau. The French troops had been at sea for two months, and Clinton wanted to attack them before they recovered from the trip.

Washington received this intelligence on the afternoon of 21 July and immediately drew up plans for a fictitious attack on New York City. He then had the "plans" delivered to a British outpost by a local farmer, who claimed to have found them on a nearby road. In the meantime, Washington also marched his army toward New York City to provide further "evidence" that he was preparing to launch an attack there. Faced with what he thought were Washington's attack plans--which were even signed by the American leader--and the readily discernible American Army movement, Clinton concluded that an attack was imminent and recalled troops then at sea to strengthen the city's defenses. "Lady's" intelligence and Washington's deception scheme thus saved the ailing French troops from probable defeat and enabled them subsequently to join with the understrength American Army.

In addition to the Culper ring, Washington had numerous other agents reporting on enemy activities in New York City. Among them were James Rivington, a prominent Tory newspaper publisher; Joshua Mersereau, his son John, and another relative; Hercules Mulligan and his brother Hugh; Army Captains (and brothers) John and Baker Hendricks; and two former counterintelligence agents--Nathaniel Sackett and retired Army Capt. Elijah Hunter. The latter became close to both General Clinton and Royal Governor William Tryon.

Another American spy, 1st Lt. Lewis J. Castigin, operated in a manner that was similar in some ways to the modus operandi of modern-day defense attaches. The British captured Castigan in January 1777 and subsequently paroled him. He then went to New York City, where he was permitted to move around freely. Castigan reported to Washington and other American military leaders on what he observed concerning British military strength and positions. Through social activities with British officers, he was able to glean advance information on their campaign plans. Washington spoke highly of Castigin's reporting.

Washington also ran several agent networks in British-occupied Philadelphia. Major John Clark managed these networks, which used such names such as "old lady" and "farmer" to describe individual agents. Lydia Darragh, acting as a lone agent, had members of her family carry information to Washington. Her social position gave her access to senior British officers, and her elicitation skills resulted in reliable advance notice of British troop movements. An entry in Washington's official expense account, dated 18 June 1778, listed $6,170 spent for secret services in Philadelphia.

In addition, Washington utilized individuals as spies for single, specific missions. One such agent, John Honeyman, was personally recruited by Washington to report on enemy capabilities at Trenton, New Jersey. Honeyman, an Irish immigrant and a weaver by trade, had previously informed the American leader that he was willing to assist the Revolutionary cause. In autumn 1776, Washington asked Honeyman to move to New Brunswick, New Jersey. Honeyman did so, entered the cattle business there, and supplied meat to British forces in the area. Washington arranged for him to be publicly denounced as a British sympathizer.

In mid-November, Washington tasked Honeyman to report on British activities around Trenton. Through his business dealings with the British and the Hessians (British-employed mercenary soldiers from the Hesse region in what is now Germany), and by underscoring his service on the British side in the French and Indian War, Honeyman was able to develop close relationships with--and elicit intelligence information from--British officers in Trenton, including their commander.

In mid-December 1776, Washington directed American forces to seize Honeyman; the order was implemented on 22 December. The "arrest" enabled Washington to debrief Honeyman on enemy activities and intentions in the Trenton area without compromising the fact that he was an American agent. He was also given false information to pass to the British after his "escape" from the Americans.

Honeyman reported that British troops had been sent to New York City for the winter, leaving only Hessian forces in Trenton. He also noted that the Hessian commander, Col. Rall, was an arrogant individual, contemptuous of American forces. The commander was lax about defensive preparations, had not ordered his men to build fortifications, and had a serious drinking problem. Honeyman also provided a map showing all enemy locations around Trenton.

After his "escape", Honeyman told the Hessians that he had seen the American winter quarters and found no signs of any troop movements. Washington, acting on Honeyman's intelligence and having sown the seeds of deception through Honeyman's remarks to the Hessians about American inaction, moved his forces across the Delaware River on Christmas night and launched a surprise attack the next morning. The Hessians were hung over from their Christmas partying, had no time to organize, and were quickly forced to surrender. While a minor triumph in military terms, the victory at Trenton came at a critical time for the American side and was a strategic victory in political and morale terms--thanks in large part to excellent intelligence work. To me, it is simply amazing the lengths our founders went to in order to secure liberty. We should be willing to do the same. The Founders risked the lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to see our nation free of tyranny. Have we become the ones happy to let the chains of slavery rest comfortably on us? Would we even know what to do with true freedom; something we haven't had in this nation for at least 100 years. The time will come when we will have to stand. Will we shrink from duty? I surely hope not.
